Most rescues, including ours, require a cage that is a minimum of 10.5 (some guinea pigs get by with 7.5 square feet) on one level for two piggies.  For young piggies and for males, we suggest even bigger cages.  Guinea pigs stay healthier and happier and they are much more enjoyable to their owners. We recommend C&C cages shown below.  Rat and chinchilla cages that have multiple-levels with steep, wire ramps are not meant for guinea pigs. The wire ramps hurt their feet. Guinea pigs don't climb as well and can fall.

C&C Cages (Cubes and Coroplast):   www.GuineaPigCages.com

We love C&C cages. The open top makes it much easier to reach in and pet your piggy, making them much friendlier. It’s a lot easier to catch them if you don’t have reach in through a small opening like they have on pet store cages. It’s much easier to clean these open-top cages. The larger size means less frequent cleaning. If you have young kids, dogs or cats, you may need to elevate the cage on a table and/or put a top on the cage.  You can use Closet Maid shelving (from Home Depot etc) for an easily-removable lid.

C&C Cages: Order online through 3rd party (www.GuineaPigCagesStore.com) but shipping will add $25 or more to the cost. A 2 grid x 3 grid cage will cost over $80 after shipping is added. But, purchasing cages from the Guinea Pig Cages Store website helps support some very valuable guinea pig websites.

To make one of these cages, you need a sheet of coroplast (plastic cardboard) and a box of grids that can be purchased online from Walmart  ( click on Walmart storage cubes ) and picked up from their store.

Andy’s Pet Shop in San Jose now carries grids and coroplast in a variety of colors.

Grids are sometimes available at Costco and Bed, Bath and Beyond. You can add a lid by using Closet Maid shelving.

Target has changed the style of some of their grids and are no longer safe for guinea pigs. Only Target grids that have 9 holes per row (not 5 or 8 holes) are safe. (Ask us for details)

Sources of Coroplast : Prices range from $16 to $48 for one 4' x 8' sheet.

Andy’s Pet Shop in San Jose has coroplast in a variety of colors for $25 each - 4’ x 8’ sheets.

Home Depot: Some, but not all, Home Depots carry coroplast:

It can be tricky to find as many of the employees don’t know what it is and what row it’s in. I have found in the Doors section, where it’s called Plastic Sheets. In January 2016, it was $15-$16 per sheet. You can search the HomeDepot website for coroplast and find it. If you want a lot of it (10 sheets), you can order it and have it delivered to the store for free.:
