Exotic Veterinarians

Guinea pigs require special vets known as exotic vets. They have different needs than cats and dogs. For examples, some medications that are safe for cats and dogs can kill guinea pigs. See www.GuineaLynx.info for a list of safe and dangerous medications.

We have a few exotic vets that we know and recommend: Note: Since I haven’t been active in rescue for a few years, some of this may be out of date. Some of these vets may no longer be around. And there are probably some great ones that I don’t know about.

Dr. Curt Nakamura, Adobe Animal Hospital, South Bay Location,15965 Los Gatos Blvd, Los Gatos, Ca. 408-357-8000   Dr. Nakamura has helped us a lot with our guinea pigs and is one of the most cavy-knowledgeable vets around. He’s only available for video visits currently. (5/21 - I’ve heard Dr. Nakamura is no longer at Adobe; I haven’t verified this, but I’m really hoping it’s not true!)

Dr. Hilary Stern, Exotic Pet Clinic of Santa Cruz, 5400 Scotts Valley Drive, Suite B, Scotts Valley, Ca. 95066 831-440-8590

Adobe Animal Hospital, Los Altos location,4470 El Camino Real, Los Altos, Ca 650-948-9661 : Dr. Blackwolf is great with piggies. Unfortunately,  I’m not up to date with their other vets to know who is experienced with piggies.

Dr. Carolynn Harvey (Chabot Veterinary Clinic) 510/538-2330 , 20877 Foothill Blvd., Hayward, CA   comes very highly recommended by our parent organization, Rabbit Haven.

******************  Emergency Veterinary Clinics  *************

All Animals Emergency  - Emergency veterinary clinic in San Francisco. 1333th 9th Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94122    415-566-0531

All Animals Emergency has vets there who treat exotics, including guinea pigs.  Dr. Bonnie Yoffee is one of the vets there.  Open weeknight 6PM to 8AM Monday through Friday. Weekends: Saturday 12:00 Noon through Monday 8AM; Open 24 hours on major holidays. We've taken our guinea pigs there and have been very happy with them. Parking is very tricky although there is some available next to the clinic.

Dr. Sue MacInnes at South Peninsula Veterinary Emergency Clinic, 3045 Middlefield Rd Palo Alto, CA 94306 (650) 494-1461  (open only for emergency care). You need to call to see if vets are on call who treat exotics.

Adobe Animal Hospital is open 24 hours a day for emergency care, but they don't always have vets on call who treat exotics (including guinea pigs). If Dr. Cote is available, he will see guinea pigs. We liked him.
