Great Pet Supply Stores
In general, we recommend pet stores that don't sell animals. Many of the large chains sell things that aren't in the best interest of the animals. What some chains consider an "Extra-Large" cage, is really too small for the happiness of the guinea pigs. Many of these stores promote products that aren't even good for your guinea pig, such as guinea pig food that has lots of seeds, dried fruits and nuts in it, multi-vitamins (Vitamin C is better), etc. Most of the large chains don't carry the food products for dogs and cats that are healthy.
There are a few pet supply stores that we highly recommend. They sell products that are good for your pets, along with supporting rescue through having repeated Rescue Adoption Fairs at their stores.
Rabbitears Pet Supply Store and Services - located at 377 Colusa Avenue, Kensington CA (510) 525 - 6155 judy@rabbitears.org . Not only do they have great products and support rescue and host adoption fairs, they also will often feature our guinea pigs for adoption through their store! They carry the Oxbow brand of guinea pig food and hay (highly recommended) and also sell Marchioro cages, one of the best kind.
The Pet Place - 777 Santa Cruz Ave., Menlo Park, Ca. 94025 (650)325-7387. They have great products (including the Oxbow brand of guinea pig feed and hay), some unique items, fully support rescue, host many adoption fairs (including ours) and are all-around nice people.
For Other Living Things 1261 S Mary Ave, Sunnyvale CA, 94087 Phone & Fax (408)739-6785. They carry the large Marchioro Tommy 120 cages and I've heard they carry supplies for making C&C cages too.
Palo Alto Animal Services - They don't carry guinea pig food or hay but do carry Marchioro cages at a very reasonable price. All profits go back to their shelter. You should call to verify that they have the Marchiroro Tommy 120 in stock. They may have to special order it for you.
Half Moon Feed and Fuel - They carry the largest Marchioro (Tommy 120) cages at very competitive prices . You can also buy kiln dried pine shavings in the horse size and save a lot of money on bedding. You can buy 12.0 cubic feet ( 340 liters) for around $8.00 (can't remember the exact price) or spend the same amount at a chain pet store for a very small bag that may not even be big enough for one large cagle.
An-Jan Feed and Pet Supply -located in San Jose, Cupertino, Milpitas. You can buy the bedding in bulk here also. They carry the Oxbow brand of guinea pig feed and hay (many people highly recommend Oxbow). They also carry the King brand of guinea pig pellets (alfalfa based) in 50 lb bags for under $20 (I think it's around $18). You should only buy this size though if you have lots of guinea pigs and can use the feed up in a couple months - because 3 months after the milling date, most of the vitamin C in guinea pig feed has decomposed. Oxbow uses a stabilized form of Vitamin C which last longer.
