We rescued 63 guinea pigs in January after they were all dumped in one dog crate in the night drop box at a bay area shelter. About half were adults (2 males, the rest females) and the other half were babies. Most of the adult sows are pregnant. Many of the piggies have gone on to other rescues. Many of them are staying with us - some need TLC or vet care before being available for adoption. A few will be ready for adoption in mid-February. Others will take longer. There were 2 adults boars (males) in with the sows until January 23 so most of the sows are on pregnancy watch until April 2 (approximately).
Sadly 8 of the guinea pigs didn't make it - most of them young pups (babies). They died either from stress, being separated from their moms right after birth or from injuries from being crushed in the dog crate that 63 guinea pigs were stuffed into before being dumped in the night drop box. One poor pup (Skippy) had a prolapsed rectum. All of this suffering was totally unnecessary and so unfair to these little cuties and their buddies.
